Accessorizing The Glock 43

Share This:

SuperGlock43-1To no one’s surprise, the sub-compact Glock 43 9mm pistol has been a best seller for the Smyrna, Georgia company. After all, pistols suited to concealed carry are best sellers and Glock fans have been waiting years for Glock to come out with a sub-compact 9mm. I reviewed the G43 for DRTV and found it to be a reliable, accurate pistol, easy to shoot and well suited to concealed carry. Given the popularity of this new pistol I thought I should see what I could do to enhance one for concealed carry, so here’s my version of the Super Mini Glock.

Sights

Glock43XSSightsSights you can see, day or night, are an absolute necessity on any defensive pistol. The stock sights on the G 43 aren’t bad – they consist of the usual white outline rear and white dot front sight Glock has been putting on their pistols since Day 1 but that doesn’t mean they can’t be improved. Over the years I’ve learned a front sight that grabs my attention is what’s needed for fast, accurate defensive shooting and the XS Big Dot is the front sight I can see under all conditions. When the light is good I see a big, white ball and in dim light or darkness it’s a glowing, green ball. The express rear sight is a wide “V” shape with a white vertical line that’s used to align the front sight when there’s time to make a precision shot; think a ball sitting atop a stick. Removing the factory sights and installing the XS sights with the tools provided with the sights takes about 15 minutes if you take your time and follow the clear instructions. The XS sights are an easy and worthwhile upgrade.

Lights and Lasers

Glock43StreamlightNight sights help us align our sights but they do nothing to help us identify a threat in the dark. For that we need a bright white light, and, in my experience, the fastest way to get hits under these conditions is with a white light and laser combination. That’s exactly what we have with the new TLR-6 from Streamlight, a 100-lumen light combined with a red laser. Another easy install that fits on the front of the trigger guard, the TLR-6 laser can be adjusted for windage and elevation. On a pistol like the G 43 I like to adjust the laser so it aligns with the middle of the front sight when I’m looking through the sights at about 7 yards. The TLR-6 can be programmed to come on with the light or laser alone, or with both. This is an excellent accessory for a concealed carry pistol.

Holsters

Glock43SimplyRuggedThe problem with installing a light or light/laser combination on a concealed carry pistol is finding a holster so you can actually carry your pistol. Another problem, even if you can find a holster, is sometimes adding a light or laser to the pistol can cause the gun to hang up during the draw. You need more than just a holster to solve these problems, you need a holster designed by someone who is a shooter and carries a gun every day.   Fortunately, I have a guy, a really good holster guy, to help me out. My guy is Rob Leahy of Simply Rugged Holsters, right here in Prescott, Arizona. I went to Rob and explained what I needed and in about a week he handed me a functional and beautiful concealed carry setup for the G-43/TLR-6 combination. The holster is based on a favorite of mine, Rob’s CID design, and the single magazine pouch has a clever feature I haven’t seen before. Rob canted it slightly forward and belled the top of the pouch to make it easier to retrieve the magazine while still keeping it secure. Both pieces, the holster and mag pouch, are beautifully finished in a basket weave design and look so good it’s a shame they’re designed for concealed carry. This rig makes it easy to securely carry and quickly draw the accessorized mini-Glock.

Ammunition

Glock43HornadyDeciding which ammunition to carry in a defensive pistol can take some doing. While most of the premium defensive ammo being produced these days is designed to offer optimum penetration and expansion roughly based upon the FBI protocols there are other considerations. The most important of these considerations is reliability – the ammunition must feed and fire through your pistol 100% of the time, and when we’re talking about feeding small, lightweight pistols the amount of felt recoil generated by the ammunition can be a factor. Before deciding which ammunition to carry in the G 43 I put a couple of boxes of three different loads through the Glock. Here’s what I found:

Hornady Critical Defense is the defensive ammunition I compare all others to. It is excellent ammunition and I’ve tested it in everything from ballistic gelatin to shooting up cars, all with excellent results. The 115gr. Flextip load runs great in the Glock with moderate felt recoil. Advertised at a velocity of 1140 feet per second (fps), I found the Critical Defense clocked an average of 1119 fps from the short, 3.39” Glock barrel.

Sig Elite Performance is a new brand of premium defensive ammunition I’ve not had a chance to run through the usual penetration and expansion tests, but from what I have read it performs up there with any of the premium loads. The 9mm load uses a 124gr. jacketed hollow point bullet at 1189 fps according to Sig. In the short Glock tube I recorded an average velocity of 1133 fps, a loss of less than 60 feet per second. Of these three loads the Sig’s heavier bullet produces noticeably more felt recoil but not so much I found it objectionable.

Glock43DoubleTapDT Tactical is the name for Doubletap Ammunition’s defensive lineup of ammunition. The load I find most intriguing in 9mm is their 77gr. jacketed hollow point, a load said to achieve 1425 fps in a three inch barrel. Driving a lightweight bullet at high velocity means the load will be flat shooting and offer less recoil but the downside is that high velocity bullets, if not properly constructed, tend to break up or expand too quickly and this limits penetration. Doubletap has overcome these issues with a bullet that expands as well as penetrates. It offers excellent performance in ballistic gelatin while defeating barriers like sheet metal and windshields. This load is accurate, has very low recoil, is pleasant to shoot and I chronographed it at 1335 fps in the Glock 43.

The Glock 43 is an excellent choice for a small, concealed carry pistol. With the addition of these accessories and ammunition it can be even better.

Multimillion-Dollar Awards Could Slow Sale of Guns to Criminal

Multimillion-Dollar Awards Could Slow Sale of Guns to Criminal
10_20_guns_01
Handguns are seen for sale in a display case at Metro Shooting Supplies in Bridgeton, Missouri, November 13, 2014. With the nation reeling from numerous mass shootings, gun laws have been a hot topic of late. Civil jury verdicts like the one involving gun sales at a Milwaukee store could pressure gun sellers into preventing illegal sales. Jim Young/Reuters
Filed Under: Opinion, guns, Gun Laws

This article first appeared on The Conversation.

The ConversationOn October 13, a Milwaukee jury awarded two police officers $5.7 million in a lawsuit against a gun store that sold the weapon that was used to shoot them.

The case comes 10 years after Congress immunized gun sellers from civil liability arising out of criminal misuse of a firearm.

Try Newsweek for only $1.25 per week

With the nation reeling from numerous mass shooting incidents like the one that shook a small Oregon town on October 1, this law was the subject of a question during the first Democratic debate.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who voted against the law as a senator from New York, has called for its repeal. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who voted for the immunity measure, has promised to reconsider his position.

Congress is unlikely to revisit this issue anytime soon. But as a scholar who has written extensively about attempts to use civil litigation to reduce gun violence, I believe lawsuits like the one in Milwaukee could well provide the gun industry with an incentive to police gun shops so that they lower the risk that the weapons fall into the wrong hands.

The Milwaukee case

The police officers in this case each sustained serious injuries after being shot in the head. Their legal team successfully argued that their case falls under an exception to the federal immunity law. This exception holds a gun seller liable if he knowingly violates a federal gun control law.

The officers presented evidence that the Badger Guns clerk had reason to know that he was facilitating an illegal straw purchase when 21-year-old Jacob Collins purchased a handgun for 18-year-old Julius Burton. Store video shows the underage Burton accompanying Collins into the store, pointing out the gun that he wanted and standing next to Collins during the purchase.

According to evidence at the trial, Collins initially listed Burton as the purchaser of the gun on the federal background check. The clerk watched as he changed it to his own name. Store co-owner Mick Beatovic testified that these constituted “red flags” that an illegal straw purchase was under way.

After the verdict, the foreperson explained the jury believed that the gun store’s business practices were “shoddy.”

He cited evidence that the store had no policies regarding responsible sales practices. The store didn’t provide training for its clerks. Store personnel didn’t appear to have any familiarity with the federal laws governing firearms sales. They didn’t understand how to fill out federally mandated background-check forms.

The local Milwaukee paper reported that the store was the source of the largest number of crime guns recovered in Milwaukee for more than a decade. After analyzing ATF data, the paper also reported the store was the nation’s top seller of crime guns in 2005. That year, 537 guns recovered in crimes were traced back to Badger Guns.

Since 2000, the National Shooting Sports Foundation—the gun industry’s trade association—has run a campaign to prevent straw purchases called “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy.” It provides training materials for store managers and clerks to help them identify straw purchases.

Pressure on the industry

These preventive measures are voluntary. Given gun rights advocates' successful track record of blocking new gun control legislation in Congress and in most states, they are unlikely to become mandatory anytime soon.

However, the threat of civil jury verdicts like the one in Milwaukee is likely to pressure gun sellers to adhere to what their own industry considers to be reasonable precautions to prevent illegal sales. If the threat of a $5.7 million verdict is not enough to incentivize rogue gun stores, it will certainly capture the attention of their liability insurers, who may insist on such precautions as a condition of coverage.

Insurance companies that provide property insurance coverage to gun stores already require that retailers employ secure firearm and ammunition storage practices on their premises to reduce the risk of theft.

Critics of lawsuits against the gun industry argue that it is unfair to hold gun sellers liable for the conduct of criminals who misuse the weapons they sell. They compare holding gun store owners liable for shootings to making car dealers responsible for crimes committed with cars like bank robberies. But these analogies miss an important point.

The underlying issue at the heart of lawsuits against the gun industry is whether the industry should bear some responsibility for policing gun sellers. The basis of the Milwaukee store’s liability was not the misuse of the gun by a criminal but its own illegal sale of the weapon.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation’s voluntary educational campaign to prevent straw purchases suggests the industry believes it can reduce the risk that criminals will obtain guns by improving retail sales practices.

The example of the food industry

Industry responsibility for public health and safety is widespread.

The food industry, for example, has long recognized that it bears primary responsibility for ensuring food safety from farm to factory to fork. Industry associations develop detailed food safety guidelines designed to complement government regulations. Companies undergo voluntary audits to verify their compliance. The threat of civil liability provides a strong motivation for these industry measures, which have greatly reduced the risk of foodborne illness.

Of course, there are many differences between the firearms and food industries. The risk of straw purchases differs from the risk of bacterial contamination. Nonetheless, the basic idea that an industry should play an active role in managing risks to public health and safety related to the products it sells is widely accepted outside of the gun industry.

Industry standards backed by civil liability are a less heavy-handed way to reduce the risk of gun violence than federal gun control legislation, which gun rights advocates consistently oppose as a threat to widespread private ownership of firearms.

The recent verdict in Milwaukee suggests that there may be a way for the gun industry to reduce the risk of straw purchases as a source of crime guns without impinging on legal sales to qualified buyers.
